CHAPTER 27

Rin’s laughter only faintly reached him as he fought to see straight through his pounding heart and racing thoughts. She shook her head, wiping one of her eyes as she regained her composure.

“You should have seen your face, chala,” she said. “I’ve never seen someone go that pale before.”

“Hold on,” said Ari. “Was that… some kind of joke?”

“Of course it was,” said Rin. “I am not pregnant. Though I do intend to one day bear your child, husband. I just wished to see how you’d react.”

“You have an evil sense of humor,” said Ari.

“I really do,” said Rin. “But I did need to speak with you about something. When you last departed from Varnas-Rav, you had only days left to live. You didn’t mention whether you managed to find a solution for yourself.”

Ari took a few more breaths, only then feeling as though he’d completely calmed down.

“Yeah, it’s settled,” he said. “I should live a long, prosperous life, assuming I don’t die fighting some monster along the way. Dormiar’s blood, don’t ever pull a prank on me like that again.”

“Next time it won’t be a prank, chala,” said Rin.

Ari rolled his eyes. “Anyway, if that was it, I should get moving. Take care, Rin.”

She took him by the hand as he began to walk away.

“Not so fast,” she said. “I’m curious, Aristial. When does this end for you?”

He frowned at her. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You set out to save the sword woman,” said Rin. “This is after you’d originally set out to find a safe haven for your other woman, which you more or less managed by depositing her in Cliffhaven.”

“After she’d already been horribly injured,” muttered Ari.

“That’s not my point,” said Rin. “You’ve saved Kerys. You’ve saved Eva. You’ve even saved me, by giving this warning. What about you?”

“I already told you, my lifespan is back to normal,” said Ari.

“Yet now you throw yourself into the types of danger that would seem to make that effort irrelevant,” she said. “Why?”

It was a good question, albeit one that didn’t have a simple answer. Ari’s focus had shifted over the past few days in a not so subtle way. It was hard for him to put into words exactly what he was feeling, and he spent a couple of seconds in silent consideration.

He’d taken on a greater responsibility, one that an orphan from Golias Hollow had no real business involving himself with. Was that who he still was?

“I’m doing this because I can,” said Ari. “Mud and blood, I’m Lord Aristial Stoneblood, ruler of Ethereal Tower. I’m not about to watch a centuries-old emperor fat-hand his way back into enslaving the few people left on the surface. I think I can make a difference… so why shouldn’t I?”

“You’re a little full of yourself,” said Rin.

“I’m well aware,” said Ari. “Part of the reason why I have no intention of having kids.”

Rin threw herself forward, giving him a quick, passionate kiss. She laughed maniacally as it ended, flapping her wings and taking to the air.
